Pupil Premium & Sports Grant
Pupil Premium Background
The Pupil Premium is a Government initiative that targets extra money for pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds. Research shows that pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds underachieve compared to their peers. The premium is provided to enable these pupils to be supported and reach their potential and have experiences and opportunities to support this.
The Government has used pupils entitled to free school meals (FSM), looked after children and service children as indicators of deprivation, and have provided a fixed amount of money for schools per pupil based on the number of children registered for FSM over a six-year rolling period.
Context
When making decisions about spending pupil premium funding, we use a range of evidence-informed sources, including The Education Endowment Foundation (EEF) 'guide to pupil premium', 'EEF The Attainment Gap' and 'EEF Foundations for good implementation'. We also consider the context of the school and local community and the subsequent challenges faced.
Common barriers for FSM children can be:
- Low baseline into Reception
- Inconsistent parental engagement, support and aspiration
- Social vulnerability
- Attendance and punctuality issues
-Weak language and communication skills
Applying for Free School Meals
If you think you may be entitled to free school meals please contact the School Office (in confidence) for support and advice.
Even if you do not wish your child to have the meals, this would mean the school could still claim Pupil Premium funding that may be used to help your child.

Sports Premium Background
The Government provides ring-fenced funding, jointly with the Department for Education, Health and Culture, Media and Sport, to help improve the provision of Physical Education and sport in Primary Schools. This funding was introduced for the academic year 2013-14 and has continued to date.
We use this money to improve confidence amongst staff in the delivery of high quality PE lessons across the school and ensure children have a good understanding of healthy lifestyles. We feel this is the most effective and efficient way for the funding to have a long lasting and positive effect on future learning and physical development of children within our school.
